Movie Posters
Once in a while I come across someone who likes to use movie posters as art in their home, and they think it really looks great. Movie posters have their place, but as art in your living room, unless your home is a tribute to the theater, is not the place for them. They are advertisement, not art.
For those of you who remember what it was like to go to the theater with family or friends on the weekend, you’ll understand when I say that movie posters added to the thrill of the movie-going experience. To walk around and look at all the ads on the walls of the theater was a ritual we all enjoyed. It put us in the mood to sit for the entire length of the movie and watch for the scene we saw on the movie posters. Of course, back then we got to watch at least two movies and a couple cartoons for our money. During intermission we took a restroom break and collected all the soft drinks, popcorn and candy we needed for the next movie. Then we were in our seats ready to enjoy it. Our children will never get to experience that thrill, I’m sorry to say.
Poster shops do have their place. And if you happen to have a TV room, or movie room, then that is the place for all those posters. Go ahead and hang them all over the walls. They really do add to the movie experience. Make some popcorn, get the soft drinks ready, look at the movie posters for a few minutes, then start the movie and enjoy your time with the family and friends. It’s a time that you’ll look back on in later years and remember with fondness. If you have the popcorn fight, make sure you pick it up and not leave it for mom. You want her to have a good time, also.
